Highlighted member, Dr. Julie Stanik-Hutt

Dr. Julie Stanik-Hutt is a Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. She holds a PhD from the University of Maryland, a Post Graduate Certificate (ACNP) from Georgetown University, MSN from University of California at San Francisco, MA in instructional design from San Diego State University and a BSN from the University of Iowa and is certified as an ACNP-BC, GNP-BC, ACNS-BC and CCNS.

Julie has more than 50 years’ experience in acute and critical care nursing, including forty as an APRN and thirty as an academic. Her practice has focused on the care of acutely and critically ill adults with medical/surgical conditions, and she has special expertise in the management of pain. Her research on pain assessment contributed to improved care for critically ill patients.  She has published more than 80 articles and chapters and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

Julie’s career has exemplified her belief that service is not a sacrifice, but an honor. She is a member of the Veteran’s Administration Geriatrics and Gerontology Advisory Committee. She served as a member of the NP Expert Panel for Integration of Gerontology Competencies with Adult Primary and Acute Care NP Competencies (2009 – 2012), represented AACN (critical care) on the Gerontologic Nursing Scope and Standards Revision Committee (2015-2017), and represented GAPNA on the American College of Surgeons Coalition for Quality in Geriatric  Surgery Project (2015-2024).  She is also an onsite accreditation visitor for the Collegiate Commission on Nursing Education. She has shared with colleagues across the country information regarding the integration of gerontology content into NP and CNS curriculum, certification and practice. 

Julie has led state and national initiatives related to education, certification, regulation, and practice of NPs, especially those prepared to care for acutely and critically ill adults and older adults. She co-authored the 2011 systematic review of patient outcomes from APRN care which led to changes in many state and federal regulations and the support of full practice authority for NPs, CNSs and CNMs. As the GAPNA representative to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing State Legislative SWOT Committee, she contributed to national efforts to implement components of the APRN Consensus Model across the United States. She is a past president of American College of Nurse Practitioners and has held leadership positions in the NONPF, AACN (critical care) and the AANP. She is a Vietnam War Era Veteran of the U. S. Navy.
