Leadership Institute

GAPNA Launches Leadership Institute

By Carolyn Clevenger

For nearly 40 years, GAPNA has served as the premier source for professional development for advanced practice nurses caring for older adults.

It has become the leading source for continuing education on clinical geriatrics as well as topics of practice change, conduct of research, and advocacy/policy on issues that matter to our patients and our practice.

Many of us, myself included, have also benefited from our own professional development as a leader through participation in chapters, committees, special interest groups, and/or the Board of Directors. Like continuing education on clinical topics, leadership development has translated into my nursing practice and accelerated my career trajectory.

This year, we are excited to announce the formalization of a leadership development program for our members – the GAPNA Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute is a 12-month mentored program for a select group of emerging advanced practice nurse leaders.

The initial cohort will participate in a small group learning collaborative, led by GAPNA Past President Carolyn Clevenger. Members of the cohort ("Fellows") will also be paired with GAPNA mentors as they gain a deeper understanding of the organization and participate in a focused initiative to advance GAPNA as the organization of choice for advanced practice nurses seeking continuing education in gerontological care as well as networking and peer support from experienced clinicians.

The Leadership Institute will kick off at the GAPNA 2019 Annual Conference in October in Las Vegas. Applications for the first cohort will open this summer. All applicants must be GAPNA members for at least 2 years, and membership must be in good standing.

Preference may be given to individuals named as Rising Stars, Aspire nominee, Optum nominee, and GAPNA Foundation nominee. Please consider whether you or someone in your network would benefit from this exciting leader development program.
