Great Lakes Chapter

Events Planned to Support the Health and Well-Being of Older Adults

by Donna Hamill

The Great Lakes Chapter welcomed new members to its Board of Directors: Nina Ganesh-Nandish started her presidential year at our June quarterly meeting.

Ruth Pendergast was elected as President-Elect, and Diana Burton was elected Treasurer. We feel fortunate our members are keen on volunteering for new opportunities. Each member elected is new to serving on the Board and we applaud their sense of commitment to ensuring the ongoing success of our chapter! We also are accepting applications for the Student Director at Large position and look forward to filling the position this fall.

The chapter is planning to participate in several local events including an Alzheimer’s Walk in August. A new Chairperson, Kristen Light, with the help of former chair MJ Favot, are planning this great event. In the past, we have used social media to boost contributions and look forward to the same success this year. Another fitness event, Healthy Living Livonia (a Detroit suburb), sponsored by a local hospital and featuring a 5K walk/run, will take place in September and members are joining in on the fun while representing GAPNA-GLC.

Our Conference Planning Committee has secured sponsorship for all meals at GLC’s Annual Conference coming up in November. A mailer was delivered in late July to all nurse practitioners in our state and surrounding areas. This year’s conference promises to be another successful event. We continue to pursue connection with our distant members who cannot attend the quarterly meetings and NPs who have not joined our group for the same reason. Donna Hamill will help our industry sponsor to welcome distant members at a remote location.

Our sponsor will host a dinner and speaker at a restaurant at the same time our group from the Detroit Metro area meets. After the presentation, our groups will connect for our quarterly meeting. We will be testing a new conference calling platform that can also be used by members who cannot attend either dinner presentation. Our hopes are that our members from all over the state of Michigan feel more closely connected to chapter activities.

We have year-round activities so there is something for everyone. We thank our many members who are proactive and always looking for new and fun opportunities to support the health and well-being of our older patients. We are fortunate to have such an active group and new members who are willing to become involved instead of sitting on the sidelines! Nina is enthusiastic about serving as Chapter President and will continue to bring a positive spirit to our chapter! We are grateful for Ruth and Diana for joining the Board as well; each has been an active and giving member of our group and they will, no doubt, be successful in their roles. We also recognize our outgoing board members, some who have served numerous times and helped guide the new members to future success.
