Encouraging Mobility

Encouraging Greater Mobility for Older Adults

The Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA) published an article, “‘Move’ Encourages Greater Mobility for Older Adults," in the Age-Friendly series in CHA’s journal,  Health Progress.

MOVE stands for Mobility Optimizes Virtually Everything.

The article is authored by GAPNA President Michelle Moccia, DNP, ANP-BC, CCRN, Program Director, Senior Emergency Center, St. Mary Mercy Livonia Hospital, Livonia, MI, and Belinda Dokic, CPht, MHA, Regional ACO/CIN Program Manager, Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, Livonia, MI.

The Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative encourages clinicians and caregivers to focus on the “Four Ms” in caring for older adults: what Matters, Medications, Mentation, and Mobility.

The St. Mary Mercy team is working on validating data collected around average length of stay and patient satisfaction, and the initial pre- and post-measurement of the mobility program’s results look promising. They indicate a statistically significant improvement in the percent of patients who were discharged to home or self-care and suffered no falls with injury.
