Professional Recognition Task Force

Gerontological Specialist APRN Certification Exam Launched

by George Peraza-Smith

The Professional Recognition Task Force (PRTF) has had a couple of productive and busy years.

Over three years ago, the GAPNA Board of Directors formed a task force to explore avenues for recognizing the experience and skills of APNs who work primarily with older adults. Under the leadership of George Peraza-Smith, the task force planned and developed a specialty certification for the Gerontological Specialist ARRN.

That vision is now being realized. On March 17, 2018, at the GAPNA Pharmacological Conference, the first Gerontological Specialist APRN Certification Examination was administered as a paper and pencil exam.

We are expecting the certification to be available for computer testing sometime around July 2018.

This is an exciting time for gerontological APRN nursing!

The dedicated PRTF taskforce includes Marianne Shaughnessy, Susan Mullaney, Kathy Daniel, Jennifer Serafin, and George Peraza-Smith.
