Great Lakes

Many Activities on the Horizon

by Donna Hamill

The Great Lakes Chapter (GLC) is in celebration mode!

We won the March Madness 2018 competition with greater than a 17% increase in membership. Thank you to current members who encouraged participation and welcome to new members! Plus, we are excited to have nominated two of our members for Excellence Awards and have also submitted a Chapter Excellence application.

GLC is looking forward to participating in the local Alzheimer’s Walk at the Detroit Zoo. We are encouraging our members to use Facebook for fundraising. Last year one participant used Facebook and doubled our chapter’s contribution to the Alzheimer’s Foundation. We highly recommend other chapters consider this fundraising platform.

Our 11th Annual Conference is in the works. It is the longest running specialty nurse conference in Michigan. With our Planning Committee’s hard work, we will have all meals sponsored. We are also looking forward to a Member’s Night the evening before the conference. We will be distributing awards: Two $1,000 student scholarships, best APRN and best student APRN Poster Awards, Chapter Clinical Excellence Award, and a Chapter Leadership Award. Get information on our Call for Posters.

We continue to consider how to reach our membership who live far outside the Detroit Metro area. Thank you for suggestions discussed on the monthly Leadership calls! We will be sending out a survey to assess interest in quarterly meeting attendance and a location that reaches the most people.

Our next quarterly meeting will feature an educational talk on bone health by a renowned bone specialist and feature Tymlos™ (abaloparatide) – a newer anabolic pharmaceutical. We will be welcoming a new Secretary to our Board of Directors (BOD) and bid farewell and huge thank you to Mary Ann Nicholas as she passes the baton. We will also be welcoming a Student Director at Large – this is the third year we have had a student in this position. The student participates in BOD and committee meetings to get a feel for leadership positions and committee participation. We find this is a great way to mentor students in a professional organization.

The Historical Committee is busy working on an update to the GLC monograph. In September 2018, we will be celebrating 20 years as a chapter. We will be celebrating this milestone with members at the December quarterly meeting. The updated monograph will be available to our members.

The horizon continues to be active and that’s what we like!
